What is rapeseed meal

Meal is a protein feed ingredient that is obtained after oil is extracted from the seeds. By structure, it is a fine grayish-brown material with a mild characteristic odor. During the processing of rapeseed, it undergoes thermal and mechanical treatment, which forms a protein concentrate with a good amino acid balance, which has significant nutritional value and is especially in demand in the feed industry. Modern varieties of rapeseed contain almost no erucic acid and glucosinolates, so the meal is easily digested by animals and does not create a burden on digestion. The product has an increased content of methionine, which conveniently compensates for the deficiency of this amino acid in many diets. Roasting during production improves protein availability and eliminates solvent residues, making rapeseed meal safe and long-lasting in storage.

Properties of rapeseed meal

The nutritional properties of rapeseed meal make it one of the most complete and balanced sources of vegetable protein available on the livestock market. Rapeseed meal contains an average of 38–45% crude protein and about 7% fiber, so it is easily included in the diets of various animal species. Protein digestibility in cattle is high due to optimal rumen decomposition, and in pigs and poultry the digestion coefficient exceeds 80%. Residual fat within 1.5–2.5% adds energy without compromising stability during storage. The composition contains phosphorus, calcium and trace elements - zinc and selenium, which support metabolism and the general condition of animals.

Studies show: including rapeseed meal in the diet helps reduce nitrogen losses, thereby reducing ammonia emissions in farms.

Granulated and non-granulated rapeseed meal

LLC "NIZHYNSKY ZHIRKOMBINAT" offers two types of rapeseed meal that differ not only in form, but also in logistics, ease of use and behavior during storage.

• Non-granulated: 0.4 t/m³, loose, powdery, convenient for mixers, but dusty, takes up more volume.
• Granulated: 0.6 t/m³, less loss, easier to transport and store, has improved fluidity, optimal for automated feeding. Granules are more stable in terms of moisture (8.5–10%), which extends shelf life and reduces the risk of spoilage.

Large feed mills often choose a loose form if they have equipment for powder ingredients, while farms prefer granules due to ease of operation.

Application in livestock farming

Our meal is used in various areas: from dairy and meat farms to pig and poultry farms and feed mills.

• In dairy cows, it is able to increase milk yields by 2–3%, and in beef young animals - to improve average daily gains.
• In pigs, rapeseed meal is introduced within 5–10%, which contributes to better development, stable feed conversion and a higher quality meat profile.
• In birds, it is added moderately due to its taste, but it works well in the diets of laying hens and broilers as an additional source of protein.

The proportion in rations is usually 5–15%, and local rapeseed production reduces dependence on imported soybeans.
